From: castlmagic@aol.com (CASTLMAGIC) Date: 21 Apr 1997 09:34:27 GMT Surfing's a great sport, because they're arent any dipshit beauracrats telling us what and what not to call our spots. If we want to name a spot "Suicides" or "Acid Drops" or whatevers, we can and Screw them! fave name: Suicides, below Diamond Head on the South Shore. When the trades are light say below 20mph, or the winds are out of the North, or best, non existent, this bowling left goes off. On light wind days, it bowls a little further Ewa than on regular windy days, the takeoff zone forms in the same place, and on the right wave, you're gonna get a long rippable left that you can take all the way almost into the old pillings and shit that stick out of the reef point. It's perfect for floaters and off the lips and even sometimes there's a little barrel. It tends to barrel way more than say cliffs, naturally, and it is a little more protected from Trades by the Diamond Head point than Cliffs and Righthands. But the most important thing about Sui's (is that how you spell it?) is to catch it when the winds are light and there is a moderate south swell. No sense in going out to Sui's when the swell is over five feet, because it just pretty much closes out even when the swell moves far out past the main lineup. There is always a cool little indicator break Ewa of the Sui's lineup, that breaks and then backs off-those are the ones that line up pretty good when the wave hits the main lineup part of the break. The crowd is cool and mostly regulars--oh yeah, you can catch a few nude women on the beach pretty regularly. Kooks just stay outta my way..i ignore you anyway. Probably named 'cause there was once a larger population of Ahi (Tuna) just outside the reef. 2) I don't knows - I've never surfed there, but have seen countless pictures of epic pits. 3) China Walls - when you get caught inside on the right day, the sets'll look like the Great Wall of China. Onsen Point (Misawa, Japan) - There's a pipe that sticks out of the beach near the road that dumps warm water from a nearby onsen(hot bath). 2. Kuso-Pa (Chigasaki, Japan) - This point is between two other points, "Park" and "Kuso-Shita"...combine the two and you've got "Kuso-Pa". From: Surfer Bob Date: Thu, 01 May 1997 15:15:58 -0700 CC: rtaylor@geog.ucsb.edu > What's your favorite surfspot name and why? Well when I was kid learning to surf in the South Bay (LA) area, there was this heavy little beachbreak we referred to as "Thumps," as in "Thumps yer ass." I broke a leash out there. I always thought "Gas Chambers" was evocative. Where I grew up, it was the spot just past "Boneyards." The other non-spot that no one ever surfed was called, "Spiders," for no apparent reason. I'm not sure why a non-spot had a name, but it did. I spent a summer surfing with Will Borgeson once at a spot I came to call "The Tease" because it was so damn fickle (esp. w/ regard to tide). I always liked "TOADs", short for "Take Off And Die." It's just down the beach from "Faceplants." I lost some skin out there. Then there's that mysto Todos spot, "Thors Hammer," and "Chickens", which is just around the corner from and much smaller than "Killers." Some San Elijo spots seem to have multiple names. I surfed a fun occasional peak there once that a little kid told me was called "Barney's." No adult has ever been able to give me a name for it. I got my first ever barrel at an anonymous peak down one of the San Onofre Campground paths that I dawn patrolled with a High School friend. We called it "Towels" because our beach towels were the only identifiable feature in sight up or down the empty beach. We used to take a boat out to this Pt. Loma spot a lot. It let us down often, but we always paddled out because it was such a long trip to get there. You'd take off and it would look like it was going to be good, then fade away. My friend named it, "Broken Promises." The first time I ever surfed a certain northern Baja spot was the best I've ever caught it. We met a little girl on the beach who wanted her daddy to take her down the beach to look at the pangas. Her name was Serenity. God, did we get some dreamy waves that day. Five years later, we still call the place "Serenity's." Best I could do, Surfer Bob ======== Newsgroups: alt.surfing,alt.surfing.bodyboard Subject: Re: Best surfspot name... From: surfer@mail.island.net (Surfing Vancouver Island) Date: Fri, 02 May 1997 17:13:28 GMT On the inside passage, between Vancouver Island and the Mainland there is a point break near Nile Creek. Being in protected waters, it works only when a SE storm has been blowing. There is 100 mile long path of deep open water to build a swell. You have to sit and wait for the storm to drop, and catch the waves as they clean up. Usually the window of opportunity is just a couple of hours. We call the spot "Denile".
