From: Jeffrey Love Date: Thu, 16 Jan 1997 00:46:50 -0800 MEA CULPA....My post of stand=surf was obviously taken as an assault on nonupright wave riders. NOT my intention. MY surf guru used the statement "once you stand, you'll never go back" to encourage THIS old man (31 at the time) To challange myself to learn to surf. Though I may NOT be a supershredmonster, I DO have the BIGGEST grin in the lineup. Because I have FUN. Which is what it's all about anyway, RIGHT? Accept my heartfelt apology for ANY insult I may have implied. and remember... If Jesus had a board, He would have surfed too...... Peace. You may be forgiven then, but that's up to the body/boogers among us. >MY surf guru used the >statement "once you stand, you'll never go back" to encourage THIS old >man (31 at the time) To challange myself to learn to surf. Now *that* I understand and agree with. Whenever I spend a sesh on my ski it is fun, but it always feels like there is something fundamental missing. I'd like to sus basic body surfing someday, but I don't expect that I'll be happy to retire my stick unless I get to the stage where I can't stand up before I get to the stage where I'm dead. From: sponge@ohana.com (Neal Miyake) Date: 22 Jan 1997 15:15:09 GMT I too have "taken the challenge" and tried learning stand up surfing. However, unlike Ric, I've always gone back to bodyboarding. Each sport has challenges within that will take a lifetime to master. (Rick Ciaccio will attest to that). We all ride waves and try to have fun doing it. When it comes down to it, that's all that matters. wave riding = surfing = fun. sponge http://www.i-one.com/hisurfad/ From rick@mesagroup.com Thu Jan 23 17:37:58 1997 Newsgroups: alt.surfing Subject: Re: MY ERROR IN JUDGEMENT re: Stand...... Agreed, when taking up a new challenge, whether it be standup surfing, bodyboarding , bodysurfing, etc., there will be plenty of frustration in the form of bumps, bruises, sandrash, embarrasment and general kookdom. The key is to pick a spot you can learn at and push yourself-- i.e. don't hesitate when you are in position, go for it, even if you crash and burn. Lord knows I have been pummelled as bad as anyone and had experiences where I thought "ok, this might be it". But I am eternally attracted to the sea and surf and will continue to do it until my body says "no more". I have never even thought of giving it up. Everyone says bodyboarding takes no skill-- that may be true to a point (in small waves) however, the worst pounding I ever took was on a boogie at the Wedge merely ducking an 18+ face-- I messed up and got sucked over the falls. Every form of surfing has its own particular set of rules and challenges. If one enjoys all of these during the span of their surfing "life", one will truely have experienced a plethora of elements that defines what surfing is all about. Learning to bodysurf, kneeboard, standup and boogie will enhance the longivity and stoke as each unique style has to be mastered unto itself. Personnally, I get bored with one style of surfing, I'm having a blast learning to kneeboard, I may even buy another standup board, I can always go to the Wedge on a big day and bodysurf with the bros. I think the sport in general, no matter what you ride is a pure, very spiritual and deeply personal experience, damn the Macarenas. >We all ride waves and try to have fun doing it.
